JP Gaillard – Swiss coffee capsule maker ECC leaving ‘losing’ Nespresso format

(Based on AFP) – JP Gaillard of Franco/Swiss firm Ethical Coffee Company, which has long butted heads with Nestle over its capsules compatible with Nespresso

JP Gaillard Of ECC in the France Factory      allowed all other compatible capsules manufacturers to exist (and Chinese companies to manufacture industrial equipment and coffee machines…)  , said Thursday it was winding down production of the “losing” format.

ECC, which has been locked (At high cost & for the benefit of all) in legal battles with the world’s leading food company over its Nespresso-compatible pods for nearly a decade, said it would all but close its production of the “loss-making” format by the end of the year.

“We’re leaving the Nespresso format market, which is totally outdated, where nobody makes money any more,” ECC founder Jean-Paul Gaillard told AFP.

The company, which was among (ndlr) the first to challenge Nestle’s monopoly on the capsules used in its machines, at one point was making around 300 million Nespresso-compatible pods a year.

But the aim now is for it to make only 10-15 million of the biodegradable capsules “just to please our most loyal customers,” Gaillard said.

Instead, he said, ECC would focus on producing a “next generation”, environmentally friendly and more flexible capsule format that he promised would “do to the coffee market what the iPhone did to the mobile phone market.”

Gaillard, who founded ECC in 2008 — 10 years after leaving his position as Nespresso chief executive — said his company had been hit hard by the constant legal squabbles with Nestle, and had also taken a beating from the some 100 competitors who have followed in its path.

Nestle has lost many of the court cases, including one this week in Germany and another at the end of May before the European Patent Office for violating an ECC patent by using a “harpoon” device in some of its machines to jam third-party pods.

But Gaillard said the constant legal squabbles with Nestle and the global food giant’s pressure on retailers not to carry ECC capsules had taken a heavy toll.

At the same time, he claimed that the Nespresso format had reached the end of the road and that everyone in the market was struggling.

Even Nestle is on the way to lose money,” he said.

Nestle flatly rejected that claim.
(Obviously this is the reason Nespresso selected an existing distributor of branded food for Vietnam….. ndlr)

“I can tell you that the portioned coffee market is a dynamic and growing category and we are delivering solid, profitable growth year on year,” spokeswoman Katherine Graham told AFP in an email.

Nestle does not provide breakout statistics for Nespresso but the Bloomberg news agency estimated sales at $4.5 billion in 2015.

New report reveals how ‘hyper-convenience’ is driving a coffee ‘revolution’ in convenience sector

Even though it does not yet concern Vietnamese market (Yespresso comment) a New research has found that when it comes to coffee, convenience is king!

With 53% of UK consumers regularly buying coffee from supermarkets, 23% from forecourts and 19% from convenience stores.

The survey by One Poll, in collaboration with Nestlé Professional, confirms that our ‘24/7 culture’ is driving a ‘revolution’ in convenience, with over half of all respondents (60%) having eaten breakfast, brunch, lunch or dinner on the go. In fact, 70% of those surveyed said they spend 10 minutes or less on breakfast and a staggering 95% spare less than 30 minutes to enjoy lunch.

It also reveals the role of technology in shaping ‘hyper-convenience,’ with 42% now using technology when eating and drinking out of home.

The research marks the launch of a new Buzz Bites report powered by Nestlé Professional: ‘HYPER-CONVENIENCE: Breaking boundaries to meet the needs of the 24/7 consumer’.

Designed to provide inspiration on how businesses are using the latest innovations to gain a commercial advantage, the report explores the role of technology in shaping eating and drinking patterns.

Paul Lumley, Brand & Communications Manager at Nestlé Professional, said: “In today’s 24/7 culture, fast paced technologies such as take-away apps, touch screen vending, smart ordering and contactless payment are promoting a convenience revolution that is changing the way we eat and drink.

“Our report draws together pioneering brands which are leading the way in embracing new technologies to shape innovation in foodservice. It also details how we at Nestlé Professional are driving change with our new generation of tech-enabled coffee machines.

“The research shows technology and hyper-convenience are inextricably linked and businesses which recognise this within the convenience sector can maximise their impact.”
